The app
Norwegian folk painting, stroke by stroke.
Rosemaling, Norway's centuries-old art of rose painting, turns plain wood into swirling gardens of scrolls, flowers and flourishes. This app lets you compose your own without a drop of paint. Choose a surface — a round plate, an oval, a panel, a spoon — pick a traditional ground colour, and build the design the way a rosemaler does.
In the studio
Every motif is drawn by the app, so each one can be dragged, scaled, rotated, mirrored and recoloured freely, with a symmetry helper to keep things balanced and a paint-on preview that reveals the piece stroke by stroke.
Heritage and gallery
A styles section introduces the great regional traditions, from the flowing asymmetry of Telemark to the tighter geometry of other valleys, each described in plain language with drawn example motifs, plus a primer on how a piece grows from ground to scrolls to flowers to overstrokes. A searchable glossary explains the motifs and brush techniques, every term paired with a small illustration.
Save each design to a gallery of your own, name it, duplicate a favourite to try another colourway, and come back to refine it. Optional wood and linen backdrops give the pieces a convincing surface, and if no texture is loaded the app draws its own grain. Switch between Norwegian and English, set the paint-on speed, and work entirely offline with no account and no ads.

Your design is yours. Every motif in the app is an original drawing made in the spirit of the tradition, not a copy of any painter's work, so what you compose belongs to you. If you take a design onto real wood, remember the app is a sketchpad and not a materials guide: paints, oils, varnishes and their solvent rags carry real fire and fume risks, so read the labels, ventilate the room and store rags properly.
Working out
Put a ring of motif slots round the edge of a plate and the arithmetic explodes, then collapses again. Two rims that differ only by turning the plate are the same painting; so are two that are mirror images. Burnside's lemma counts what is genuinely different, and the gap between the raw number and the real one is enormous.
With twelve slots and three motifs there are 531 441 ways to fill the rim, but only 44 368 survive as different once you may rotate the plate, and 22 913 once a mirrored design counts as the same one: a twenty-three-fold collapse, and it grows with every slot you add. That is the whole reason symmetry feels economical in folk painting — a handful of decisions already covers more distinct rims than anyone could paint.
What's not here: no motifs, no scrolls, no roses and no gallery. The ring on the left is coloured slots, not painting, and the count says nothing about which arrangements are beautiful, which is the only question that matters at the brush. The studio, the styles and the glossary are in the app.
